Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology
Infectious diseases are caused by microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites) and constitute the most common group of diseases both in our country and worldwide.
In the Department of Infectious Diseases, the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions such as high-fever illnesses (influenza, common cold, diarrhea, food poisoning, erysipelas, typhoid fever, brucellosis, viral hepatitis, meningitis, malaria), parasitic diseases such as intestinal worms, osteomyelitis, and surgical site infections are carried out.
In addition, in recent years, travel medicine and adult vaccination programs have also been implemented in the Department of Infectious Diseases.
Some infectious diseases include:
- Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci are bacteria that particularly cause throat infections (pharyngitis) in people who gather in enclosed spaces during the winter months. Streptococci are transmitted from person to person via airborne droplets from the respiratory tract.
- Helminth infections occur when helminth eggs are ingested or larvae penetrate the skin to enter the body.
- Diarrhea is defined as an increase in daily bowel movements (more than 2–3 times) and stool volume (more than 200 grams), with a watery consistency. It can be caused by infectious or non-infectious factors.
- Typhoid and paratyphoid fever, also called enteric fever, are almost identical diseases, differing only in the causative microorganisms. Characterized by confusion, persistent high fever, headache, and abdominal pain, these diseases are transmitted via ingestion of contaminated food and water. They may cause epidemics in certain countries and, if left untreated, can even result in death.
Although different infectious diseases are seen in different geographic regions, a wide variety of contagious diseases—from tuberculosis to viral hepatitis—are common even in developed countries, requiring rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
