Pathology

Pathology, by definition, is the science of disease. It examines the changes that occur in organs and at the cellular level as a result of disease. Tissue and cell samples are analyzed using standard methods, and when necessary, additional techniques such as histo(cyto)chemistry, immunohisto(cyto)chemistry, immunofluorescence, and FISH. Diseases are diagnosed by examining the appearance of cells under a microscope.

In the pathology laboratory, detailed examinations are performed for:

  • Cervicovaginal smears
  • Fine-needle aspirations obtained, if necessary, under US or CT guidance
  • Tru-cut biopsies
  • Small biopsies
  • Excisional biopsies
  • Surgical specimens

In cervicovaginal smear examinations, the liquid-based smear technique is used.

In the evaluation of biopsy and surgical specimens—particularly in tumor cases—advanced staining studies such as histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques are recommended for patients when necessary.

The Pathology Department of Emsey Hospital works in constant communication with all specialties, in line with the hospital’s multidisciplinary working principles.
