Unilateral Biportal Endoscopic (UBE) Spine Surgery

Unilateral Biportal Endoscopic (UBE) Spine Surgery

What is Unilateral Biportal Endoscopic (UBE) Surgery?

UBE is an endoscopic spinal surgery performed through two small one-centimeter ports. One portal is used to insert the endoscope, while the other is used for surgical instruments. This technique allows for wider visualization and more precise interventions. It is particularly preferred for common spinal disorders such as herniated discs and spinal stenosis.

Unlike traditional surgical methods, UBE surgery is performed with smaller incisions and minimizes tissue damage. As a result, patients experience less pain and recover faster. Hospital stays are shorter, and most patients are discharged on the same day. The minimally invasive nature of UBE also offers cosmetic advantages.

What Are the Advantages of UBE Surgery?

UBE surgery has many advantages compared to traditional spine surgery:

  • Less pain and faster recovery: Thanks to small incisions and minimal tissue damage.

  • Smaller incisions: Better cosmetic results and faster healing.

  • Lower risk of complications: Reduced risk of infection and post-surgical issues.

  • Faster discharge: Most patients can leave the hospital the same day.

  • Precise intervention and wide visualization: Endoscopic technology provides clear imaging and high surgical accuracy.

Which Spinal Problems Can UBE Treat?

  • Herniated Disc (Lumbar Disc Herniation): Caused by damaged spinal discs that press on nerves. UBE relieves this pressure safely and effectively.

  • Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses nerves and causes severe pain. UBE widens the space, releasing nerves.

  • Nerve Compression (Foraminal Stenosis): UBE effectively relieves pressure on nerve roots caused by narrowing of the foramina.

Pre- and Post-Surgery: Preparation and Recovery

Before UBE surgery, patients must undergo recommended tests and imaging. Heavy activities should be avoided a few days before surgery.

Recovery is usually fast and painless. Most patients are discharged on the same day. Following the prescribed physiotherapy program speeds up healing and allows patients to return to daily life quickly.
